- Learn future tense with aller + infinitif
- Working on situations such as being lost in France, order at the bakery/shop
- Learn all about "in, on, next to, behind etc"

Level 1 is for students who have already done a bit of French and feel comfortable with basic questions and answers. In this group, **we speak mostly in French** (so you need to be ready for it), but we slow things down when needed and switch to English occasionally to explain trickier concepts. We focus on everyday French: **the way people actually talk**, and we take time to build your vocabulary, fix common mistakes, and work on your listening and speaking confidence.

At this level, students are moving towards **more natural conversations**. You’ve learned most of the core tenses (present, passé composé, imparfait, future, conditionnel) and can use them, even if not always perfectly. **You probably understand a lot more than you can say**, and while you can hold a conversation, you sometimes struggle to find the right word. That’s absolutely fine, this class is here to help with exactly that.

This group is ideal for **advanced beginners**—students who can already manage simple conversations and are starting to feel more comfortable expressing themselves in French, even if it’s slowly. You should already be familiar and be able to speak with the present tense, the past tense (passé composé) and the near future (futur proche), even if they’re not perfect yet.

We’ll continue working on those tenses and practise speaking more fluently in longer sentences. Expect to still make lots of mistakes (that's totally normal), but also to start enjoying the feeling of really communicating in French.

You might be able to say things like:

- *“Le week-end dernier, je suis allée au restaurant avec mes amis. J'étais heureux. Et toi, qu'est ce que tu as fait ?”*

At this level, students should have a **solid foundation** in basic French communication. EDINBURGH - MONDAY ADVANCED COURSE

*Approximate level: A1+ to A2*

📆 Calendar: IN-PERSON: From the 11th of June, you’ll have an hour class **every Wednesday at 5 pm for 8 weeks** until the 30th of July. If you miss a class, you’ll still get the material and some explanations from me, so then no excuse to keep practising your French every week!

This group is ideal for **advanced beginners**, students who can already manage simple conversations and are starting to feel more comfortable expressing themselves in French, even if it’s slowly. You should already be familiar and be able to speak with the present tense, the past tense (passé composé) and the near future (futur proche), **even if they’re not perfect yet**. With this group, we started to learn as well about **the "conditionnel"** (je pourrais, je voudrais, je serais), so you need to be aware of the tense without mastering it.

We’ll continue working on those tenses and practise speaking more fluently in longer sentences. Expect to still make lots of mistakes (that's totally normal), but also to start enjoying the feeling of really communicating in French. You might be able to say things like:

- “Le week-end dernier, je suis allée au restaurant avec mes amis. J'étais heureux. Et toi, qu'est ce que tu as fait ? Est ce que tu voudrais aller au cinéma demain ?”
- “Demain, je vais partir en France et je vais retourner au travail la semaine prochaine. Et toi, qu'est ce que tu vas faire demain ?”

If that sounds like you—even if you still have to think a lot before you speak—this is the right level.

🤔***Unsure whether to choose Level 1 or Level 2?***

Choose Level 2 if you've already used the past tense a little and want to push yourself to speak more and move beyond beginner conversations. If you're not there yet, Level 1 is a safer and more supportive place to start.

We'll meet in a French cosy café in Bruntsfield after it’s closed (La Barantine), which makes it feel more like hanging out than a formal lesson - indeed don't expect a "rigid" approach such as formal institutions. Students who come are super friendly and motivated—not just to learn French, but to enjoy some time with interesting and nice people. So my classes are all about **learning and having a good time together**.

EDINBURGH - WEDNESDAY LEVEL 2+ BEGINNER COURSE

At this level, students should have a **solid foundation** in basic French communication. They can "comfortably" introduce themselves, ask and answer simple questions, and use some simple everyday verbs in the present tense (to go, to do, to like, to want, to come, can). They are also able to navigate common interactions, such as ordering in a restaurant and expressing likes, dislikes, and preferences. At this level, you should be comfortable with your present tense, as we'll add the past tense to your répertoire!

During this term, you'll learn about ***le passé composé*** which is a past tense in French (j'ai fait, j'ai pris etc) and the reflexive verbs (se réveiller, se laver etc), and so much more.

**🤔Unsure whether to choose Level 0 or Level 1**? Here’s my advice: if you're deciding between these two levels, keep in mind that for Level 1, you should already feel comfortable forming questions and answers in French. You should know at least a few key verbs (perhaps 5–10), and while you might still make mistakes, especially with small connecting words, you can create sentences like:

- Quand est-ce que je peux aller en France ?
- Je ne vais pas en France parce que je travaille demain.
- Pourquoi est-ce que tu dois habiter à Paris ?
- Je ne peux pas faire du sport avec mes amis
- Quand est ce que vous allez regarder le football ?

Level 1 is for students who have already done a bit of French and feel comfortable with basic questions and answers. You should be able to introduce yourself, say a few things about your life, and **you need to be able to use common verbs** like aller, faire, vouloir, pouvoir, devoir etc.—even if you still make mistakes or hesitate sometimes.

If you can create sentences like:

- “Quand est-ce que tu vas en France ?”
- “Je ne dois pas travailler demain, alors je vais au cinéma.”
- "Qu'est ce que tu fais aujourd'hui?'

then this is the right place for you.

This course will help you speak more naturally and feel more in control when forming sentences. We’ll practise common everyday situations and build your confidence in real conversations.
