This level is for students who are **no longer scared of speaking**, you're jumping in, even if you’re still searching for the right words and making regular mistakes. You’ve already learned the present, past (passé composé), and future tenses, and you've probably seen the imparfait and conditionnel, even if you’re still figuring out how to use them.

In this group, we really start pushing the conversation further: talking about memories, plans, ideas, and preferences with more variety and vocabulary. The pace is gentle, and there's plenty of space to ask questions and build confidence, but we’re aiming for fluidity.

🤔**If you're unsure whether to pick Level 2 or Level 3:**

If you can talk in detail about what you did last weekend, what you're doing tomorrow, or what you would like to do next year (even with mistakes), you’re probably ready for Level 3. If that still feels too far away and scary, then Level 2 will help you get there.

That’s why we keep our classes small, with a maximum of 6 students, to ensure we can adjust to each student’s level and make sure everyone gets plenty of speaking time. Every class includes homework and different types of exercises to help you keep a good routine outside of the class. You'll get all the materials in a printed and online version, before/after each class, meaning you don't need to buy a book.

**A quick note about level tests**

You might have done an online test that says you're B1 or even B2—but just a small heads-up: online tests often focus on grammar or vocabulary, and they don’t always reflect your speaking ability.

In our courses, the main focus is on spoken French. So even if you've learned lots of grammar or done well on paper, it’s totally normal to find speaking much harder. That’s why I always recommend choosing a level based on how confidently you can talk in French, especially in real-life situations, not just what you’ve studied or what a test says.

In this group, **we speak mostly in French** (so you need to be ready for it), but we slow things down when needed and switch to English occasionally to explain trickier concepts. We focus on everyday French: **the way people actually talk**, and we take time to build your vocabulary, fix common mistakes, and work on your listening and speaking confidence.

At this level, students are moving towards **more natural conversations**. You’ve learned most of the core tenses (present, passé composé, imparfait, future, conditionnel) and can use them, even if not always perfectly. **You probably understand a lot more than you can say**, and while you can hold a conversation, you sometimes struggle to find the right word. That’s absolutely fine, this class is here to help with exactly that.

You don’t need to be fluent yet, but you should already feel comfortable listening and speaking French with others.

***Not sure whether to choose the intermediate level or advanced?***

If you feel confident speaking French, can comfortably engage in conversation without relying on English, and can understand most of what a native speaker says at their near-normal speed, I’d recommend the advanced class. You’re still learning, making mistakes, and growing your vocabulary, but you can hold conversations and follow along.

The intermediate class, however, is better suited for those who need a bit more support. We take things a bit slower, use English as needed, and work on building both confidence and vocabulary.

Level 1 is for students who have already done a bit of French and feel comfortable with basic questions and answers. You should be able to introduce yourself, say a few things about your life, and use common verbs like *aller*, *faire*, *vouloir*, *pouvoir*, *devoir*, etc, even if you still make mistakes or hesitate sometimes.

At this level, you may have also started using the *passé composé* to talk about past events, which is a great foundation. In this course, we’ll continue working on the *passé composé* so you can speak more confidently about past experiences and participate more fully in conversations. You’ll also build confidence using the other tenses you already know.

If you can create sentences like:

-  “Quand est-ce que tu vas en France ?”
-  “Je ne travaille pas demain, alors je vais au cinéma.”
-  “Qu’est-ce que tu fais aujourd’hui ?”

and sometimes even say things like:

-  “J’ai vu ce film la semaine dernière.” 

 then this is the right place for you.

This is a conversation-based class for students who are already comfortable speaking French and want to take their language to a more natural and nuanced level. At this stage, **you’re not afraid to speak**, you understand most things a native speaker says (even at normal speed), and you're able to express your ideas in depth—even if you still make mistakes.

In this class, we speak French all the time. We’ll dig into more complex structures, idiomatic expressions, and subtle differences in meaning. You’ll also learn how to sound more French in the way you express yourself—less textbook, more real life.

Our discussions go deeper and cover a variety of themes, from culture and society to daily life and personal opinions. It’s a great space to fine-tune your skills, get feedback, and enjoy chatting in French in a small group where everyone is motivated to push themselves. Is this class for you? If you feel it's too much, I would recommend you the intermediate one!

DUNDEE - WEDNESDAY INTERMEDIATE

*Approximate level: A1+ towards A2*

📆 Calendar: IN-PERSON: From the 17th of September, you’ll have an hour class **every Wednesday at 4 pm for 6 weeks** until the 22nd of October. If you miss a class, you’ll still get the material and some explanations from me, so then no excuse to keep practising your French every week!

This group is ideal for **advanced beginners**, students who can already manage simple conversations and are starting to feel more comfortable expressing themselves in French, even if it’s slowly. You should already be familiar and be able to speak with the present tense, the past tense (passé composé) and the near future (futur proche), even if they’re not perfect yet.

We’ll continue working on those tenses and practise speaking more fluently in longer sentences. Expect to still make lots of mistakes (that's totally normal), but also to start enjoying the feeling of really communicating in French.

You might be able to say things like:

- *“Le week-end dernier, je suis allée au restaurant avec mes amis. J'étais heureux. Et toi, qu'est ce que tu as fait ?”*
- *“Demain, je vais partir en France et je vais retourner au travail la semaine prochaine. Et toi, qu'est ce que tu vas faire demain ?”*

If that sounds like you, even if you still have to think a lot before you speak, this is the right level. Plus, at this level, students should be able to take the **initiative** to learn more words!

DUNDEE - WEDNESDAY LEVEL 2 BEGINNER

📆 Calendar: IN-PERSON: From the 27th of August, you’ll have an hour class **every Wednesday at 6:15 pm** for 7 weeks until the 8th of October. If you miss a class, you’ll still get the material and some explanations from me so then no excuse to keep practising your French every week!

At this level, students should have a **solid foundation** in basic French communication. They can comfortably introduce themselves, ask and answer simple questions, and use some simple everyday verbs in the present tense (to go, to do, to like, to want, to come, can). They are also able to navigate common interactions, such as ordering in a restaurant and expressing likes, dislikes, and preferences. At this level, you should be comfortable with your present and future tenses, and know a few verbs in the past tense!

Students in this group should have already learnt the basics of ***le passé composé,*** which is a past tense in French (j'ai fait, j'ai pris etc). During this term, you'll practise it, and learn the reflexive verbs (se réveiller, se laver etc), and so much more.

**🤔Unsure whether to choose Level 0 or Level 1**? Here’s my advice: if you're deciding between these two levels, keep in mind that for Level 1, you should already feel comfortable forming questions and answers in French. You should know at least a few key verbs (perhaps 5–10), and while you might still make mistakes, especially with small connecting words, you can create sentences like:

- Quand est-ce que je peux aller en France ?
- Je ne vais pas en France parce que je dois travailler demain.
- Pourquoi est-ce que tu es allé habiter à Paris ? Est ce que tu as mangé des escargots ?
- Je ne peux pas faire du sport avec mes amis parce que je suis malade.
- Quand est ce que vous allez regarder le football ?

Therefore, for Level 1, you shouldn’t be completely new to French; you should already have a bit of confidence speaking and be capable of forming basic sentences. On the other hand, if you’ve learned some French at school or through Duolingo but struggle to ask or answer simple questions correctly, I’d recommend starting with Level 0 or maybe a petit level 1.

That’s why we keep our classes small, with a maximum of 6 students, to ensure we can adjust to each student’s level and make sure everyone gets plenty of speaking time. The key to learning a language is by speaking it, so our main focus is simple: speak, speak, and speak.

🗣You'll be learning from a **native French Speaker**, so you’ll experience how French is truly spoken, not from an app or a textbook. A quick heads-up: you won’t be learning the typical phrases like “Parlez-vous français ?” or “Voulez-vous visiter le musée ?” because that’s not how we really talk. But don’t worry, I’ll explain all of that during the course and help you sound like a real French speaker!

The class is open for only **6 students** to keep the class small and cosy, but mostly unsure everyone can practice and ask questions.

We'll meet in the famous French cosy café La Barantine in Stockbridge after it’s closed, which makes it feel more like hanging out than a formal lesson - indeed, don't expect a "rigid" approach such as formal institutions. Students who come are super friendly and motivated, not just to learn French, but to enjoy some time with interesting and nice people. So my classes are all about **learning and having a good time together**.

Every class includes homework and different types of exercises to help you keep a good routine outside of the class.

You'll get all the materials in a printed and online version, before/after each class, meaning you don't need to buy a book.

EDINBURGH - LEVEL 1+ BEGINNER: French Course

📆 Calendar: IN-PERSON: From the 27th of August, you’ll have an hour class **every Wednesday at 7:30 pm** for 7 weeks until the 8th of October. If you miss a class, you’ll still get the material and some explanations from me so then no excuse to keep practising your French every week!

Students just started to have a foundation in basic French communication at this level. They can introduce themselves, ask and answer simple questions, and use some simple everyday verbs in the present tense (to go, to do, to like, to want, to come, can). They are also able to navigate common interactions, such as ordering in a restaurant and expressing likes, dislikes, and preferences.

During these 7 weeks, you'll learn:

- More verbs with the present tense
- Speak about your feelings
- Using "mon, ton, son" correctly
- Learn the future tense "aller + infinitif"
