This level is for students who have already learnt some basic French before, and they are able to use verbs as (I/you can, I/you want, I/you go, I/you am, I/you have). You can turn the sentences into a negative (je ne peux pas, je ne suis pas…) or turn them into a question (est-ce que je peux… est-ce que tu vas…?). Therefore, you are beginners, but you still have some basic knowledge of the French language. 

🤔***Unsure whether to choose Level 0 or Level 1?*** As a general idea, here’s my advice: if you're deciding between these two levels, keep in mind that for Level 1, you should already feel “comfortable “ forming questions and answers in French. You should know at least a few key verbs, and while you might still make mistakes, especially with small connecting words, you can create sentences like:

- Quand est-ce que je peux aller en France ?
- Je ne vais pas en France parce que je travaille demain.
- Je ne peux pas faire du sport avec mes amis

Therefore, for Level 1, you shouldn’t be completely new to French (learning French in school 30 years ago doesn't really count haha). DUNDEE - WEDNESDAY INTERMEDIATE

*Approximate level: A1+ towards A2*

This group is ideal for **advanced beginners**, students who can already manage simple conversations and are starting to feel more comfortable expressing themselves in French, even if it’s slowly. You should already be familiar and be able to speak in the present tense, the past tense (passé composé) and the near future (futur proche), even if they’re not perfect yet.

We’ll continue working on those tenses and practise speaking more fluently in longer sentences. Expect to still make lots of mistakes (that's totally normal), but also to start enjoying the feeling of really communicating in French.

You might be able to say things like:

- *“Le week-end dernier, je suis allée au restaurant avec mes amis. J'étais heureux. Et toi, qu'est ce que tu as fait ?”*
- *“Demain, je vais partir en France et je vais retourner au travail la semaine prochaine. Et toi, qu'est ce que tu vas faire demain ?”*

If that sounds like you, even if you still have to think a lot before you speak, this is the right level. Plus, at this level, students should be able to take the **initiative** to learn more words!

**A quick note about level tests**

You might have done an online test that says you're B1 or even B2—but just a small heads-up: online tests often focus on grammar or vocabulary, and they don’t always reflect your speaking ability.

In our courses, the main focus is on spoken French. So even if you've learned lots of grammar or done well on paper, it’s totally normal to find speaking much harder. That’s why I always recommend choosing a level based on how confidently you can talk in French, especially in real-life situations, not just what you’ve studied or what a test says.

For a better understanding of this level, in this class, you’ll meet some students **who just completed the level 0 - beginner course.**

We’ll continue working on those tenses and practise speaking more fluently in longer sentences. Expect to still make lots of mistakes (that's totally normal), but also to start enjoying the feeling of really communicating in French. You might be able to say things like:

- “Le week-end dernier, je suis allée au restaurant avec mes amis, nous avons regardé un film au cinéma. On a pris le bus à 19h15. Mes amis m’ont recommandé ce film. Et toi, qu'est ce que tu as fait ?”

This level is for students who are **no longer scared of speaking**; you're jumping in, even if you’re still searching for the right words and **making regular mistakes**. You’ve already learned the present, past (passé composé), and future tenses, and you've probably seen the imparfait and conditionnel, even if you’re still figuring out how to use them.

In this group, we really start pushing the conversation further: talking about memories, plans, ideas, and preferences with more variety and vocabulary. *The pace is gentle*, and there's plenty of space to ask questions and build confidence, but we’re aiming to move to the next step! **Indeed, we are starting to only speak in French during the class…**

EDINBURGH - THURSDAY LEVEL 3+ IMPROVERS

*Approximate level: B2 and beyond*

📆 Calendar: IN-PERSON: From the 24th of March, you’ll have an hour class **every Tuesday at 6:05 pm for 7 weeks** until the 5th of May. If you miss a class, you’ll still get the material and some explanations from me, so then no excuse to keep practising your French every week!

This is **a conversation-based class** for students who are already very comfortable speaking French and want to take their language to a more natural and nuanced level. At this stage, you’re not afraid to speak, you understand most things a native speaker says (even at near-normal speed), and you're able to express your ideas in depth, even if you still make mistakes.

In this class, **we speak French all the time**. We’ll dig into more complex structures, idiomatic expressions, and subtle differences in meaning. You’ll also learn how to sound more French in the way you express yourself—less textbook, more real life. Our discussions go deeper and cover a variety of themes, from culture and society to daily life and personal opinions. It’s a great space to fine-tune your skills, get feedback, and enjoy chatting in French in a small group where everyone is motivated to push themselves. Is this class for you? If you feel it's too much, I would recommend the intermediate one!

🤔 ***Not sure whether to choose the intermediate level or the advanced?*** If you feel confident speaking French, can comfortably engage in conversation without relying on English, and can understand most of what a native speaker says at their near-normal speed, I’d recommend the advanced class.

In this group, **we speak mostly in French** (so you need to be ready for it), but we slow things down when needed and switch to English occasionally to explain trickier concepts. We focus on everyday French: **the way people actually talk**, and we take time to build your vocabulary, fix common mistakes, and work on your listening and speaking confidence.

At this level, students are moving towards **more natural conversations**. You’ve learned most of the core tenses (present, passé composé, imparfait, future, conditionnel) and can use them, even if not always perfectly. **You probably understand a lot more than you can say**, and while you can hold a conversation, you sometimes struggle to find the right word. That’s absolutely fine; this class is here to help with exactly that.

You don’t need to be fluent yet, but you should already feel comfortable listening and speaking French with others.

***Not sure whether to choose the intermediate level or the advanced?***

If you feel confident speaking French, can comfortably engage in conversation without relying on English, and can understand most of what a native speaker says at their near-normal speed, I’d recommend the advanced class. You’re still learning, making mistakes, and growing your vocabulary, but you can hold conversations and follow along.

This group is ideal for **advanced beginners**, students who can already manage simple conversations and are starting to feel more comfortable expressing themselves in French, even if it’s slowly. You’ve learnt *“the conditional tense”* with a few verbs ( i.e: je serais, j’aurais, je voudrais, je pourrais, je devrais), even if you don’t master them!

 This is **a conversation-based class** for students who are already very comfortable speaking French and want to take their language to a more natural and nuanced level. At this stage, you’re not afraid to speak, you understand most things a native speaker says (even at near-normal speed), and you're able to express your ideas in depth (even if you still make mistakes).

In this class, **we speak French all the time**. We’ll dig into more complex structures, idiomatic expressions, and subtle differences in meaning. You’ll also learn how to sound more French in the way you express yourself; less textbook, more real life. Our discussions go deeper and cover a variety of themes, from culture and society to daily life and personal opinions. It’s a great space to fine-tune your skills, get feedback, and enjoy chatting in French in a small group where everyone is motivated to push themselves. Is this class for you? If you feel it's too much, I would recommend the intermediate one!

This level is for students who have already learnt some basic French before, and they are able to use verbs as (I/you can, I/you want, I/you go, I/you am, I/you have). You can turn the sentences into a negative (je ne peux pas, je ne suis pas…) or turn them into a question (est-ce que je peux… est-ce que tu vas…?). Therefore, you are beginners, but you still have some basic knowledge of the French language. Students in this group should start feeling comfortable with the future tense using “aller” as well, such as “je vais visiter Paris, nous allons manger des croissants…'“.

🤔***Unsure whether to choose Level 0 or Level 1?*** As a general idea, here’s my advice: if you're deciding between these two levels, keep in mind that for Level 1, you should already feel “comfortable “ forming questions and answers in French. You should know at least a few key verbs, and while you might still make mistakes, especially with small connecting words, you can create sentences like:

- Quand est-ce que je peux aller en France ?
- Je ne vais pas en France parce que je travaille demain.
- Je ne peux pas faire du sport avec mes amis

Therefore, for Level 1, you shouldn’t be completely new to French (learning French in school 30 years ago doesn't really count haha). You should already have some confidence in speaking and be capable of forming basic sentences. On the other hand, if you’ve learned some French at school or through Duolingo but struggle to ask or answer simple questions correctly, I’d recommend starting with Level 0 or a petit level 1.

**A quick note about level tests**

You might have done an online test that says you're B1 or even B2—but just a small heads-up: online tests often focus on grammar or vocabulary, and they don’t always reflect your speaking ability.

In our courses, the main focus is on spoken French. So even if you've learned lots of grammar or done well on paper, it’s totally normal to find speaking much harder. That’s why I always recommend choosing a level based on how confidently you can talk in French, especially in real-life situations, not just what you’ve studied or what a test says.

DUNDEE - WEDNESDAY PETIT LEVEL 2 BEGINNER

*Approximate level: A1*

*Note that this level is more advanced than a simple Level 1!*

📆 Calendar: IN-PERSON: From the 24th of March, you’ll have an hour class **every Tuesday at 5 pm for 7 weeks** until the 5th of May. If you miss a class, you’ll still get the material and some explanations from me, so then no excuse to keep practising your French every week!

At this level, students should have a **solid foundation** in basic French communication. They can comfortably introduce themselves, ask and answer simple questions, and use some simple everyday verbs in the present tense (to go, to do, to like, to want, to come, can). They are also able to navigate common interactions, such as ordering in a restaurant and expressing likes, dislikes, and preferences. At this level, you should be comfortable with your present and future tense (with *aller*).

Students in this group should be feeling comfortable enough to use ***le passé composé,*** which is a past tense in French (j'ai fait, j'ai pris etc). During this term, we will keep working on it and add the reflexive verbs (se réveiller, se laver, se coucher) to your *répertoire*, so it’s important you feel pretty good with your past tense, future tense (je vais manger, tu vas faire…) and présent (while still making mistakes)!

**🤔Unsure whether to choose Level 0 or Level 1**? Here’s my advice: if you're deciding between these two levels, keep in mind that for Level 1, you should already feel comfortable forming questions and answers in French. You should know at least a few key verbs (perhaps 5–10), and while you might still make mistakes, especially with small connecting words, you can create sentences like:

- Quand est-ce que je peux aller en France ?

This level is for students who have already learnt some basic French before, and they are able to use verbs such as (I/you can, I/you want, I/you go, I/you am, I/you have). You can turn the sentences into a negative (je ne peux pas, je ne suis pas…) or turn them into a question (est-ce que je peux… est-ce que tu vas…?). Therefore, you are beginners, but you still have some basic knowledge of the French language.

EDINBURGH - LEVEL 0 BEGINNER COURSE

EDINBURGH - FRIDAY LEVEL 1 BEGINNER COURSE

📆 Calendar: IN-PERSON: From the 23rd of March, you’ll have an hour class **every Monday at 7:15 pm for 8 weeks** until the 11th of May. If you miss a class, you’ll still get the material and some explanations from me, so then no excuse to keep practising your French every week!

In this group, **we speak mostly in French** (so you need to be ready for it), but we slow things down when needed and switch to English occasionally to explain trickier concepts. We focus on everyday French: **the way people actually talk**, and we take time to build your vocabulary, fix common mistakes, and work on your listening and speaking confidence.

At this level, students are moving towards **more natural conversations**. You’ve learned most of the core tenses (present, passé composé, imparfait, future, conditionnel) and can use them, even if not always perfectly. **You probably understand a lot more than you can say**, and while you can hold a conversation, you sometimes struggle to find the right word. That’s absolutely fine; this class is here to help with exactly that.

You don’t need to be fluent yet, but you should already feel comfortable listening and speaking French with others.

***Not sure whether to choose the intermediate level or the advanced?***

If you feel confident speaking French, can comfortably engage in conversation without relying on English, and can understand most of what a native speaker says at their near-normal speed, I’d recommend the advanced class. You’re still learning, making mistakes, and growing your vocabulary, but you can hold conversations and follow along.

The intermediate class, however, is better suited for those who need a bit more support. We take things a bit slower, use English as needed, and work on building both confidence and vocabulary.

EDINBURGH - MONDAY INTERMEDIATE FRENCH CLASSES

*Approximate level: A1+ towards A2*

📆 Calendar: ONLINE: From the 17th of March, you’ll have an hour class **every Tuesday at 4:30 pm** for 7 weeks until the 28th of April. If you miss a class, don't worry, you'll still get the **replay** of the class and the materials, so no excuse to keep practising your French every week.

This group is ideal for **advanced beginners**, students who can already manage simple conversations and are starting to feel more comfortable expressing themselves in French, even if it’s slowly. You should already be familiar and be able to speak with the present tense, the past tense (passé composé) and the near future (futur proche) and a bit of conditionnal (je pourrais, je devrais, j’aimerais), even if they’re not perfect yet.

We’ll continue working on those tenses and practise speaking more fluently in longer sentences. Expect to still make lots of mistakes (that's totally normal), but also to start enjoying the feeling of really communicating in French.

You might be able to say things like:

- *“Le week-end dernier, je suis allée au restaurant avec mes amis. J'étais heureux. Et toi, qu'est ce que tu as fait ?”*
- *“Demain, je vais partir en France et je vais retourner au travail la semaine prochaine. Et toi, qu'est ce que tu vas faire demain ?”*
