At this level, students should have a **solid foundation** in basic French communication. They can "comfortably" introduce themselves, ask and answer simple questions, and use some simple everyday verbs in the present tense (to go, to do, to like, to want, to come, can). They are also able to navigate common interactions, such as ordering in a restaurant and expressing likes, dislikes, and preferences. They have learnt future tense with aller: "je vais manger ce soir, je vais voyager l'année prochaine".

During these 7 weeks, you'll:
- Revise your present tense with devoir, pouvoir, vouloir etc
- Revise future tense with aller + infinitif
- Working on situations such as being lost in France, order at the bakery/shop
- Learn all about "in, on, next to, behind etc"

**🤔Unsure whether to choose Level 0 or Level 1?**
Here’s my advice: if you're deciding between these two levels, keep in mind that for Level 1, you should already feel comfortable forming questions and answers in French. You should know at least a few key verbs (perhaps 5–10), and while you might still make mistakes, especially with small connecting words, you can create sentences like:
- Quand est-ce que je peux aller en France ?
- Je ne vais pas en France parce que je travaille demain.
- Pourquoi est-ce que tu dois habiter à Paris ?
- Je ne peux pas faire du sport avec mes amis
- Quand est ce que vous allez regarder le football ?

Therefore, for Level 1, you shouldn’t be completely new to French; you should already have a bit of confidence speaking and be capable of forming basic sentences. On the other hand, if you’ve learned some French at school or through Duolingo but struggle to ask or answer simple questions correctly, I’d recommend starting with Level 0.

That’s why we keep our classes small, with a maximum of 6 students, to ensure we can adjust to each student’s level and make sure everyone gets plenty of speaking time. The key to learning a language is by speaking it, so our main focus is simple: speak, speak, and speak.

🗣 You'll learn from a **native French Speaker**, so you’ll experience how French is truly spoken—not from an app or a textbook. A quick heads-up: you won’t be learning the typical phrases like “Parlez-vous français ?” or “Voulez-vous visiter le musée ?” because that’s not how we really talk. But don’t worry, I’ll explain all of that during the course and help you sound like a real French speaker!

We'll meet in a French cosy café in Bruntsfield after it’s closed (La Barantine), which makes it feel more like hanging out than a formal lesson - indeed don't expect a "rigid" approach such as formal institutions. Students who come are super friendly and motivated—not just to learn French, but to enjoy some time with interesting and nice people. So my classes are all about **learning and having a good time together**.

Every class includes **homework** and different types of exercises to help you keep a good routine outside of class. You'll get all the materials on a printed and online version, before/after each class, meaning you don't need to buy a book.

EDINBURGH - MONDAY LEVEL 1 BEGINNER COURSE

📚 At this level, we speak all the time in French. Students at this level are not afraid to speak and are happy to go over more complex concepts in French. They can follow full French discussion and know pretty much all the tenses. They can therefore be considered as an advanced student. This class is mostly **discussion-oriented** but still has a structure to give you more vocabulary and French expressions. I aim to immerse you for an hour in France, with almost full speed of French, and to teach you the way French people speak.

🤔 ***Not sure whether to choose the improver level or intermediate/advanced?***
If you feel confident speaking French, can comfortably engage in conversation without relying on English, and can understand most of what a native speaker says at their near-normal speed, I’d recommend the intermediate class. You’re still learning, making mistakes, and growing your vocabulary, but you can hold conversations and follow along.

The improvers class, however, is better suited for those who need a bit more support. We take things slower, use English as needed, and work on building both confidence and vocabulary.

EDINBURGH - MONDAY ADVANCED COURSE

📆 Calendar: IN-PERSON: From the 7th of April, you’ll have an hour class **every Monday at 5 pm for 7 weeks** until the 19th of May. If you miss a class, you’ll still get the material and some explanations from me, so then no excuse to keep practising your French every week!

Designed for students who have learnt French for a few months and feel comfortable having a limited conversation using present tense and future with aller: “Qu’est ce que tu vas faire aujourd’hui ? Je vais voir mes amis, nous allons nager… "Pourquoi tu ne dois pas sortir ce soir ?”. Students have seen **past tense** in French before, and they can use it quite comfortably "je suis allé, j'ai fait, j'ai mangé".  They covered before theimparfait "j'allais, je mangeais", but they don't master it yet. They start to understand a bit more French speakers when they speak at their own pace. You should then be able to make simple sentences quite easily. You still have a lack of vocabulary.
