- Revise your present tense with devoir, pouvoir, vouloir etc
- Learn future tense with aller + infinitif
- Working on situations such as being lost in France, order at the bakery/shop
- Learn all about "in, on, next to, behind etc"

This level is for students who are **no longer scared of speaking**—you're jumping in, even if you’re still searching for the right words and making regular mistakes. You’ve already learned the present, past (passé composé), and future tenses, and you've probably seen the imparfait and conditionnel, even if you’re still figuring out how to use them.

In this group, we really start pushing the conversation further: talking about memories, plans, ideas, and preferences with more variety and vocabulary. The pace is gentle, and there's plenty of space to ask questions and build confidence, but we’re aiming for fluidity.

*Approximate level: A1+ towards A2*

This group is ideal for **advanced beginners**—students who can already manage simple conversations and are starting to feel more comfortable expressing themselves in French, even if it’s slowly. You should already be familiar and be able to speak with the present tense, the past tense (passé composé) and the near future (futur proche), even if they’re not perfect yet.

We’ll continue working on those tenses and practise speaking more fluently in longer sentences. Expect to still make lots of mistakes (that's totally normal), but also to start enjoying the feeling of really communicating in French.

You might be able to say things like:

- *“Le week-end dernier, je suis allée au restaurant avec mes amis. J'étais heureux. Et toi, qu'est ce que tu as fait ?”*
- *“Demain, je vais partir en France et je vais retourner au travail la semaine prochaine. Et toi, qu'est ce que tu vas faire demain ?”*

At this level, students should have a **solid foundation** in basic French communication. They can "comfortably" introduce themselves, ask and answer simple questions, and use some simple everyday verbs in the present tense (to go, to do, to like, to want, to come, can). They are also able to navigate common interactions, such as ordering in a restaurant and expressing likes, dislikes, and preferences. At this level, you should be comfortable with your present tense and future proche (je vais faire, tu vas manger), as we'll add the past tense to your répertoire!

During this term, you'll learn about ***le passé composé*** which is a past tense in French (j'ai fait, j'ai pris etc) and the reflexive verbs (se réveiller, se laver etc), and so much more.

**🤔Unsure whether to choose Level 0 or Level 1**? Here’s my advice: if you're deciding between these two levels, keep in mind that for Level 1, you should already feel comfortable forming questions and answers in French. You should know at least a few key verbs (perhaps 5–10), and while you might still make mistakes, especially with small connecting words, you can create sentences like:

- Quand est-ce que je peux aller en France ?
- Je ne vais pas en France parce que je travaille demain.
- Pourquoi est-ce que tu dois habiter à Paris ?
- Je ne peux pas faire du sport avec mes amis
- Quand est ce que vous allez regarder le football ?

7-week course: designed to prepare beginners to travel to France and have real conversations with French people.

📆 Calendar: IN-PERSON: From the 25th of June, you’ll have an hour class **every Wednesday at 7:30 pm** for 7 weeks until the 6th of August. If you miss a class, you’ll still get the material and some explanations from me so then no excuse to keep practising your French every week!

Level 0: Designed for new French learners or those constructing basic sentences, even after using tools like Duolingo for several months and learning French in school.

Over the 7 weeks, you’ll learn to:

- Introduce yourself
- Use essential verbs
- Ask questions
- Express likes and dislikes
- Make well-structured sentences
- Order food and drinks
- Make reservations

🤔 ***Unsure whether to choose Level 0 or Level 1?*** Here’s my advice: if you're deciding between these two levels, keep in mind that for Level 1, you should already feel comfortable forming questions and answers in French. You should know at least a few key verbs (perhaps 5–10), and while you might still make mistakes, especially with small connecting words, you can create sentences like:

- Quand est-ce que je peux aller en France ?
- Je ne vais pas en France parce que je travaille demain.
- Pourquoi est-ce que tu dois habiter à Paris ?
- Je ne peux pas faire du sport avec mes amis

Therefore, for Level 1, you shouldn’t be completely new to French (learning French in school 30 years ago doesn't really count haha). At this level, students are moving towards **more natural conversations**. You’ve learned most of the core tenses (present, passé composé, imparfait, future, conditionnel) and can use them, even if not always perfectly. **You probably understand a lot more than you can say**, and while you can hold a conversation, you sometimes struggle to find the right word. That’s absolutely fine—this class is here to help with exactly that.

You should already be familiar and be able to speak with the present tense, the past tense (passé composé) and the near future (futur proche), even if they’re not perfect yet.

We’ll continue working on those tenses and practise speaking more fluently in longer sentences. Expect to still make lots of mistakes (that's totally normal), but also to start enjoying the feeling of really communicating in French.

You might be able to say things like:

- *“Le week-end dernier, je suis allée au restaurant avec mes amis. J'étais heureux. Et toi, qu'est ce que tu as fait ?”*

*📚* This is **a conversation-based class** for students who are already very comfortable speaking French and want to take their language to a more natural and nuanced level. At this stage, you’re not afraid to speak, you understand most things a native speaker says (even at near-normal speed), and you're able to express your ideas in depth—even if you still make mistakes.

In this class, **we speak French all the time**. We’ll dig into more complex structures, idiomatic expressions, and subtle differences in meaning. You’ll also learn how to sound more French in the way you express yourself—less textbook, more real life. Our discussions go deeper and cover a variety of themes, from culture and society to daily life and personal opinions. It’s a great space to fine-tune your skills, get feedback, and enjoy chatting in French in a small group where everyone is motivated to push themselves. Is this class for you? If you feel it's too much, I would recommend the intermediate one!

EDINBURGH - WEDNESDAY LEVEL 2+ BEGINNER COURSE

📆 Calendar: IN-PERSON: From the 9th of June, you’ll have an hour class **every Monday at 6:10 pm for 8 weeks** until the 28th of July. If you miss a class, you’ll still get the material and some explanations from me, so then no excuse to keep practising your French every week!

At this level, students should have a **solid foundation** in basic French communication. They can "comfortably" introduce themselves, ask and answer simple questions, and use some simple everyday verbs in the present tense (to go, to do, to like, to want, to come, can). They are also able to navigate common interactions, such as ordering in a restaurant and expressing likes, dislikes, and preferences. At this level, you should be comfortable with your present tense, as we'll add the past tense to your répertoire!

During this term, you'll learn about ***le passé composé*** which is a past tense in French (j'ai fait, j'ai pris etc) and the reflexive verbs (se réveiller, se laver etc), and so much more.

**🤔Unsure whether to choose Level 0 or Level 1**? Here’s my advice: if you're deciding between these two levels, keep in mind that for Level 1, you should already feel comfortable forming questions and answers in French. You should know at least a few key verbs (perhaps 5–10), and while you might still make mistakes, especially with small connecting words, you can create sentences like:

- Quand est-ce que je peux aller en France ?
- Je ne vais pas en France parce que je travaille demain.
- Pourquoi est-ce que tu dois habiter à Paris ?
- Je ne peux pas faire du sport avec mes amis
- Quand est ce que vous allez regarder le football ?

Therefore, for Level 1, you shouldn’t be completely new to French; you should already have a bit of confidence speaking and be capable of forming basic sentences. On the other hand, if you’ve learned some French at school or through Duolingo but struggle to ask or answer simple questions correctly, I’d recommend starting with Level 0 or maybe a petit level 1.

That’s why we keep our classes small, with a maximum of 6 students, to ensure we can adjust to each student’s level and make sure everyone gets plenty of speaking time. The key to learning a language is by speaking it, so our main focus is simple: speak, speak, and speak.

A quick heads-up: you won’t be learning the typical phrases like “Parlez-vous français ?” or “Voulez-vous visiter le musée ?” because that’s not how we really talk. But don’t worry, I’ll explain all of that during the course and help you sound like a real French speaker!

Level 1 is for students who have already done a bit of French and feel comfortable with basic questions and answers. You should be able to introduce yourself, say a few things about your life, and **you need to be able to use common verbs** like aller, faire, vouloir, pouvoir, devoir etc.—even if you still make mistakes or hesitate sometimes.

If you can create sentences like:

- “Quand est-ce que tu vas en France ?”
- “Je ne dois pas travailler demain, alors je vais au cinéma.”
- "Qu'est ce que tu fais aujourd'hui?'

then this is the right place for you.

This course will help you speak more naturally and feel more in control when forming sentences. We’ll practise common everyday situations and build your confidence in real conversations.
