This level is for students who are **no longer scared of speaking**; you're jumping in, even if you’re still searching for the right words and **making regular mistakes**. You’ve already learned the present, past (passé composé), and future tenses, and you've probably seen the imparfait and conditionnel, even if you’re still figuring out how to use them.

In this group, we really start pushing the conversation further: talking about memories, plans, ideas, and preferences with more variety and vocabulary. *The pace is gentle*, and there's plenty of space to ask questions and build confidence, but we’re aiming to move to the next step! **Indeed, the goal is to only speak in French during the class…**

*Not sure which level to choose?*

If you can discuss what you did last weekend, what you're doing tomorrow, or what you would like to do next year (even with mistakes), ask questions and start feeling confident, you’re probably ready for Level 3. If that still feels too far away and scary, then Level 2 will help you get there.

Level 0: Designed for new French learners or those constructing basic sentences, even after using tools like Duolingo for several months and learning French in school.

Over the 8 weeks, you’ll learn to:

- Introduce yourself
- Use essential verbs
- Ask questions

- Order food and drinks
- Make reservations

Here’s my advice: if you're deciding between these two levels, keep in mind that for Level 1, you should already feel comfortable forming questions and answers in French. You should know at least a few key verbs (perhaps 5–10), and while you might still make mistakes, especially with small connecting words, you can create sentences like:

- Quand est-ce que je peux aller en France ?
- Je ne vais pas en France parce que je travaille demain.
- Pourquoi est-ce que tu dois habiter à Paris ?

They are also able to navigate common interactions, such as ordering in a restaurant and expressing likes, dislikes, and preferences. At this level, you should be comfortable with your present and future tense (with *aller*).

Students in this group should be feeling comfortable enough to use ***le passé composé,*** which is a past tense in French (j'ai fait, j'ai pris etc). During this term, we will keep working on it and add the reflexive verbs (se réveiller, se laver, se coucher) to your *répertoire*, so it’s important you feel pretty good with your past tense, future tense (je vais manger, tu vas faire…) and présent (while still making mistakes)!

In this group, **we speak mostly in French** (so you need to be ready for it), but we slow things down when needed and switch to English occasionally to explain trickier concepts. We focus on everyday French: **the way people actually talk**, and we take time to build your vocabulary, fix common mistakes, and work on your listening and speaking confidence.

At this level, students are moving towards **more natural conversations**. You’ve learned most of the core tenses (present, passé composé, imparfait, future, conditionnel) and can use them, even if not always perfectly. **You probably understand a lot more than you can say**, and while you can hold a conversation, you sometimes struggle to find the right word. In the previous block, we started covering *“the conditional tense”* briefly with 5 verbs (je serais, j’aurais, je voudrais, je pourrais, je devrais), so it would be good for you to know them.

In this class, **we speak French all the time**. We’ll dig into more complex structures, idiomatic expressions, and subtle differences in meaning. You’ll also learn how to sound more French in the way you express yourself—less textbook, more real life. EDINBURGH - TUESDAY LEVEL 2+ BEGINNERS

*Approximate level: B2 and beyond*

📆 Calendar: IN-PERSON: From the 12th of January, you’ll have an hour class **every Monday at 7:15 pm for 8 weeks** until the 2nd of March. If you miss a class, you’ll still get the material and some explanations from me, so then no excuse to keep practising your French every week!

*📚* This is **a conversation-based class** for students who are already very comfortable speaking French and want to take their language to a more natural and nuanced level. At this stage, you’re not afraid to speak, you understand most things a native speaker says (even at near-normal speed), and you're able to express your ideas in depth—even if you still make mistakes.

In this class, **we speak French all the time**. We’ll dig into more complex structures, idiomatic expressions, and subtle differences in meaning. You’ll also learn how to sound more French in the way you express yourself—less textbook, more real life. Our discussions go deeper and cover a variety of themes, from culture and society to daily life and personal opinions. It’s a great space to fine-tune your skills, get feedback, and enjoy chatting in French in a small group where everyone is motivated to push themselves. Is this class for you? If you feel it's too much, I would recommend the intermediate one!

🤔 ***Not sure whether to choose the intermediate level or advanced?*** If you feel confident speaking French, can comfortably engage in conversation without relying on English, and can understand most of what a native speaker says at their near-normal speed, I’d recommend the advanced class.

The improvers class, however, is better suited for those who need a bit more support. We take things slower, use English as needed, and work on building both confidence and vocabulary.

That's the overall idea, but as you know, language learning is fluid and can vary from one student to another. That’s why we keep our classes small, with a maximum of 6 students, to ensure we can adjust to each student’s level and make sure everyone gets plenty of speaking time. The key to learning a language is by speaking it, so our main focus is simple: speak, speak, and speak.

We'll meet in a French cosy café in Bruntsfield after it’s closed (La Barantine), which makes it feel more like hanging out than a formal lesson - indeed don't expect a "rigid" approach such as formal institutions. Students who come are super friendly and motivated—not just to learn French, but to enjoy some time with interesting and nice people. So my classes are all about **learning and having a good time together**.

This group is ideal for **advanced beginners**, students who can already manage simple conversations and are starting to feel more comfortable expressing themselves in French, even if it’s slowly. You should already be familiar and be able to speak with the present tense, the past tense (passé composé) and the near future (futur proche), **even if they’re not perfect yet**.  In the previous block, we started covering *“the conditional tense”* briefly with 5 verbs (je serais, j’aurais, je voudrais, je pourrais, je devrais), so it would be good for you to know them.

We’ll continue working on those tenses and practise speaking more fluently in longer sentences. Expect to still make lots of mistakes (that's totally normal), but also to start enjoying the feeling of really communicating in French. You might be able to say things like:

- “Le week-end dernier, je suis allée au restaurant avec mes amis, nous avons regardé un film au cinéma. On a pris le bus à 19h15. J'étais heureux. Et toi, qu'est ce que tu as fait ?”
- “Demain, je vais partir en France et je vais retourner au travail la semaine prochaine. Et toi, qu'est ce que tu vas faire demain ?”
- “Je voudrais aller en France mais je n’ai pas de vacances disponibles…”

If that sounds like you (even if you still have to think a lot before you speak) this is the right level.

📆 Calendar: IN-PERSON: From the 7th of January, you’ll have an hour class **every Wednesday at 6:15 pm** for 7 weeks until the 18th of February. If you miss a class, you’ll still get the material and some explanations from me so then no excuse to keep practising your French every week!

This group is ideal for **advanced beginners**, students who can already manage simple conversations and are starting to feel more comfortable expressing themselves in French, even if it’s slowly. You should already be familiar and be able to speak with the present tense, the past tense (passé composé) and the near future (futur proche), **even if they’re not perfect yet**. With this group, we started to learn as well about **the "conditionnel"** (just with a few verbs like: je pourrais, je voudrais, je serais), so you need to be aware of the tense without mastering it.

EDINBURGH - LEVEL 2 BEGINNER FRENCH

📆 Calendar: IN-PERSON: From the 6th of January, you’ll have an hour class **every Tuesday at 7:15 pm** for 7 weeks until the 17th of February. If you miss a class, you’ll still get the material and some explanations from me so then no excuse to keep practising your French every week!

In this group, **we speak mostly in French** (so you need to be ready for it), but we slow things down when needed and switch to English occasionally to explain trickier concepts. We focus on everyday French: **the way people actually talk**, and we take time to build your vocabulary, fix common mistakes, and work on your listening and speaking confidence.

At this level, students are moving towards **more natural conversations**. You’ve learned most of the core tenses (present, passé composé, imparfait, future, conditionnel) and can use them, even if not always perfectly. **You probably understand a lot more than you can say**, and while you can hold a conversation, you sometimes struggle to find the right word. That’s absolutely fine, this class is here to help with exactly that.

You don’t need to be fluent yet, but you should already feel comfortable listening and speaking French with others.
