This class is designed for Improvers students (A2+) or Level 3 with us.

This level is for students who are **no longer scared of speaking French**; you're jumping in, even if you’re still searching for the right words and **making regular mistakes**. You’ve already learned the present, past (passé composé & imparfait), conditionnel and future tenses, even if you’re still figuring out how to use them perfectly.

In this group, we really start pushing the conversation further: talking about memories, plans, ideas, and preferences with more variety and vocabulary. *The pace is gentle*, and there's plenty of space to ask questions and build confidence, but we’re aiming to move to the next step! **Indeed, the goal is to only speak in French during the class - so expect that.**

Rather than revising grammar for the sake of it, we'll practise the French you'll actually need when you're in France. Through fun speaking activities and role-plays, you'll build confidence and refresh key vocabulary to be ready for your next trip (or just to have fun)!

***Who is this class for?**

This class is designed for Level 1 students. You should already be able to:

- Introduce yourself and have simple conversations.
- Ask and answer everyday questions.
- Talk about your likes, dislikes and preferences.
- Use common verbs confidently in the present tense.
- Feel reasonably comfortable communicating in familiar situations.

If you've completed our Level 1 course (or have a similar level), this class is perfect for you. Please note: this class is not for absolute beginners!

Rather than learning new concepts, we'll revisit the French you've already learned through fun speaking activities, games and guided conversations. You'll reactivate useful vocabulary, practise expressing yourself more naturally and rebuild your confidence in a relaxed, supportive atmosphere.

This group is ideal for **advanced beginners (A2)**, students who can already manage simple conversations and are starting to feel more comfortable expressing themselves in French, even if it’s slowly. Mostly, the idea is you could go towards a slow discussion class only in French.

Level 2 - Summer French Refresher

📆 Calendar: IN-PERSON: From the 24th of August, you’ll have an hour class **every Monday at 6 pm** for 8 weeks until the 12th of October. If you miss a class, you’ll still get the material and some explanations from me, so then no excuse to keep practising your French every week!

This level is for students who have already learnt some basic French before, and they are able to use some basic verbs in French, and can turn the sentences into a negative (je ne peux pas, je ne suis pas…) or turn them into a question (est-ce que je peux… est-ce que tu vas…?). Therefore, you are beginners, but you still have some basic knowledge of the French language. Students in this group should start feeling comfortable with the future tense using “aller” as well, such as “je vais visiter Paris, nous allons manger des croissants…'“. Plus, in the previous term, we covered an introduction to ++the past tense++ (j’ai fait, je suis allé, j’ai pris etc); therefore, you need to have seen it or be aware of how to do it.

🤔***Unsure whether to choose Level 0 or Level 1?*** As a general idea, here’s my advice: if you're deciding between these two levels, keep in mind that for Level 1, you should already feel “comfortable “ forming questions and answers in French. You should know at least a few key verbs, and while you might still make mistakes, especially with small connecting words, you can create sentences like:

- Quand est-ce que je peux aller en France ?
- Je ne vais pas en France parce que je travaille demain.
- Je ne peux pas faire du sport avec mes amis

Therefore, for Level 1, you shouldn’t be completely new to French (learning French in school 30 years ago doesn't really count haha). You should already have some confidence in speaking and be capable of forming basic sentences. On the other hand, if you’ve learned some French at school or through Duolingo but struggle to ask or answer simple questions correctly, I’d recommend starting with Level 0.

📚 That's the overall idea, but as you know, **language learning is fluid** and can vary from one student to another. That’s why we keep our classes small, with a maximum of 6 students, to ensure we can adjust to each student’s level and make sure everyone gets plenty of speaking time. At this level, students are moving towards **more natural conversations**. You’ve learned most of the core tenses (present, passé composé, imparfait, future, conditionnel) and can use them, even if not always perfectly. **You probably understand a lot more than you can say**, and while you can hold a conversation, you sometimes struggle to find the right word. That’s absolutely fine; this class is here to help with exactly that.

If you feel confident speaking French, can comfortably engage in conversation without relying on English, and can understand most of what a native speaker says at their near-normal speed, I’d recommend the advanced class. You’re still learning, making mistakes, and growing your vocabulary, but you can hold conversations and follow along.

The intermediate class, however, is better suited for those who need a bit more support. We take things a bit slower, use English as needed, and work on building both confidence and vocabulary.

At this level, students should have a **solid foundation** in basic French communication. They can comfortably introduce themselves, ask and answer simple questions, and use some simple everyday verbs in the present tense (to go, to do, to like, to want, to come, can). They are also able to navigate common interactions, such as ordering in a restaurant and expressing likes, dislikes, and preferences. At this level, you should be comfortable with your present, future and past tense, as we'll add the conditional to your répertoire!

Students in this group should have already learnt the basics of ***le passé composé,*** which is a past tense in French (j'ai fait, je suis allé, j'ai pris etc). During this term, you'll practise it, and so much more.

**🤔Unsure whether to choose Level 0 or Level 1**? Here’s my advice: if you're deciding between these two levels, keep in mind that for Level 1, you should already feel comfortable forming questions and answers in French. You should know at least a few key verbs (perhaps 5–10), and while you might still make mistakes, especially with small connecting words, you can create sentences like:

- Quand est-ce que je peux aller en France ?
- Je ne vais pas en France parce que je dois travailler demain.
- Pourquoi est-ce que tu es allé habiter à Paris ? Est ce que tu as mangé des escargots ?
- Je ne peux pas faire du sport avec mes amis parce que je suis malade.
- Quand est ce que vous allez regarder le football ?

This group is ideal for **advanced beginners**, students who can already manage simple conversations and are starting to feel more comfortable expressing themselves in French, even if it’s slowly. You should already be familiar and be able to speak with the present tense, the past tense (passé composé) and the near future (futur proche) and a bit of conditional (je pourrais, je devrais, j’aimerais), even if they’re not perfect yet.

We’ll continue working on those tenses and practise speaking more fluently in longer sentences. Expect to still make lots of mistakes (that's totally normal), but also to start enjoying the feeling of really communicating in French. We are starting to **speak only in French** (slowly) during the class, so you need to be aware of it! 

You might be able to say things like:

- *“Le week-end dernier, je suis allée au restaurant avec mes amis. J'étais heureux. Et toi, qu'est ce que tu as fait ?”*
- *“Demain, je vais partir en France et je vais retourner au travail la semaine prochaine. Et toi, qu'est ce que tu vas faire demain ?”*

ONLINE LEVEL 2+: French Beginner Course

These relaxed **one-off summer workshops** are the perfect opportunity to refresh what you already know in a friendly small group.

Rather than learning new concepts, we'll revisit the French you've already learned through fun speaking activities, games and guided conversations. You'll reactivate useful vocabulary, practise expressing yourself more naturally and rebuild your confidence in a relaxed, supportive atmosphere.

***Who is this class for?**

This level is for students who have already learnt some basic French before, and they are able to use some basic verbs in French, and can turn the sentences into a negative (je ne peux pas, je ne suis pas…) or turn them into a question (est-ce que je peux… est-ce que tu vas…?). Therefore, you are beginners, but you still have some basic knowledge of the French language. Students in this group should start feeling comfortable with the future tense using “aller” as well, such as “je vais visiter Paris, nous allons manger des croissants…'“ and the past tense (j’ai fait, je suis allé, j’ai pris etc). Don’t worry, you don’t need to be perfect but still be aware of it and understand it.

If you've completed our Level 1+ course (or have a similar level), this class is perfect for you.

Each session will be different and built around practical speaking activities designed to help you reactivate the French you already know.

Together we'll:

- revise useful vocabulary and everyday expressions

This level is for students who are **no longer scared of speaking**; you're jumping in, even if you’re still searching for the right words and **making regular mistakes**. In this group, we really start pushing the conversation further: talking about memories, plans, ideas, and preferences with more variety and vocabulary. *The pace is gentle*, and there's plenty of space to ask questions and build confidence, but we’re aiming to move to the next step! Here’s my advice: if you're deciding between these two levels, keep in mind that for Level 1, you should already feel comfortable forming questions and answers in French. You should know at least a few key verbs (perhaps 5–10), and while you might still make mistakes, especially with small connecting words, you can create sentences like:

This group is ideal for **advanced beginners**, students who can already manage simple conversations and are starting to feel more comfortable expressing themselves in French, even if it’s slowly. You should already be familiar and be able to speak in the present tense, the past tense (passé composé) and the near future (futur proche), **even if they’re not perfect yet**. In previous blocks, we started covering *“the conditional tense”* with a few verbs ( i.e: je serais, j’aurais, je voudrais, je pourrais, je devrais), so it would be good for you to know them.

At this level, students are moving towards **more natural conversations**. At this level, students are moving towards more natural conversations. This group is ideal for **advanced beginners**, students who can already manage simple conversations and are starting to feel more comfortable expressing themselves in French, even if it’s slowly. You should already be familiar and be able to speak in the present tense, the past tense (passé composé & imparfait) and the near future (futur proche), **even if they’re not perfect yet**. You’ve learnt *“the conditional tense”* with a few verbs ( i.e: je serais, j’aurais, je voudrais, je pourrais, je devrais), even if you don’t master them!

We’ll continue working on those tenses and practise speaking more fluently in longer sentences. Expect to still make lots of mistakes (that's totally normal), but also to start enjoying the feeling of really communicating in French.

You might be able to say things like:

- *“Le week-end dernier, je suis allée au restaurant avec mes amis. J'étais heureux. Et toi, qu'est ce que tu as fait ?”*

Level 1 is for students who have already done a bit of French and feel comfortable with basic questions and answers. You should be able to introduce yourself, say a few things about your life, and use common verbs like aller, faire, vouloir, pouvoir, devoir, etc, even if you still make mistakes or hesitate sometimes.

For a better understanding of this level, in this class, you’ll meet some students **who completed the level 0 - beginner course.**

*Hesitating between level 0 and 1?*

Here’s my advice: if you're deciding between these two levels, keep in mind that for Level 1, you should already feel comfortable forming questions and answers in French. Over the 8 weeks, you’ll learn to:

EDINBURGH - THURSDAY LEVEL 2+ BEGINNERS

*Approximate level: B2 and beyond*

📆 Calendar: IN-PERSON: From the 8th of September, you’ll have an hour class **every Tuesday at 6:05 pm for 7 weeks** until the 20th of October. If you miss a class, you’ll still get the material and some explanations from me, so then no excuse to keep practising your French every week!

This is **a conversation-based class** for students who are already very comfortable speaking French and want to take their language to a more natural and nuanced level. At this stage, you’re not afraid to speak, you understand most things a native speaker says (even at near-normal speed), and you're able to express your ideas in depth, even if you still make mistakes.

In this class, **we speak French all the time**. We’ll dig into more complex structures, idiomatic expressions, and subtle differences in meaning. You’ll also learn how to sound more French in the way you express yourself—less textbook, more real life. Our discussions go deeper and cover a variety of themes, from culture and society to daily life and personal opinions. It’s a great space to fine-tune your skills, get feedback, and enjoy chatting in French in a small group where everyone is motivated to push themselves. Is this class for you? If you feel it's too much, I would recommend the intermediate one!

In this group, **we speak mostly in French** (so you need to be ready for it), but we slow things down when needed and switch to English occasionally to explain trickier concepts. We focus on everyday French: **the way people actually talk**, and we take time to build your vocabulary, fix common mistakes, and work on your listening and speaking confidence.

At this level, students are moving towards **more natural conversations**. You’ve learned most of the core tenses (present, passé composé, imparfait, future, conditionnel, subjonctif) and can use them, even if not always perfectly. **You probably understand a lot more than you can say**, and while you can hold a conversation, you sometimes struggle to find the right word. That’s absolutely fine; this class is here to help with exactly that.

You don’t need to be fluent yet, but you should already feel comfortable listening and speaking French with others.

This group is ideal for **advanced beginners**, students who can already manage simple conversations and are starting to feel more comfortable expressing themselves in French, even if it’s slowly.  This is **a conversation-based class** for students who are already very comfortable speaking French and want to take their language to a more natural and nuanced level. At this stage, you’re not afraid to speak, you understand most things a native speaker says (even at near-normal speed), and you're able to express your ideas in depth (even if you still make mistakes).

In this class, **we speak French all the time**. We’ll dig into more complex structures, idiomatic expressions, and subtle differences in meaning. You’ll also learn how to sound more French in the way you express yourself; less textbook, more real life. Our discussions go deeper and cover a variety of themes, from culture and society to daily life and personal opinions. It’s a great space to fine-tune your skills, get feedback, and enjoy chatting in French in a small group where everyone is motivated to push themselves. Is this class for you? If you feel it's too much, I would recommend the intermediate one!

**Level 0:** Designed for new French learners or those constructing basic sentences, even after using tools like Duolingo for several months and learning French in school.

Over the 7 weeks, you’ll learn to:

- Introduce yourself
- Use essential verbs
- Ask questions
- Express likes and dislikes
- Make well-structured sentences
- Order food and drinks
- Make reservations

🤔***Unsure whether to choose Level 0 or Level 1?*** As a general idea, here’s my advice: if you're deciding between these two levels, keep in mind that for Level 1, you should already feel “comfortable “ forming questions and answers in French. You should know at least a few key verbs, and while you might still make mistakes, especially with small connecting words, you can create sentences like:

- Quand est-ce que je peux aller en France ?
- Je ne vais pas en France parce que je travaille demain.
- Je ne peux pas faire du sport avec mes amis

Therefore, for Level 1, you shouldn’t be completely new to French (learning French in school 30 years ago doesn't really count haha). In this group, we really start pushing the conversation further: talking about memories, plans, ideas, and preferences with more variety and vocabulary. *The pace is gentle*, and there's plenty of space to ask questions and build confidence, but we’re aiming to move to the next step! **Indeed, the goal is to only speak in French during the class… And we started doing it!**

This group is ideal for **advanced beginners**, students who can already manage simple conversations and are starting to feel more comfortable expressing themselves in French, even if it’s slowly. You should already be familiar and be able to speak in the present tense, the past tense (passé composé) and the near future (futur proche), **even if they’re not perfect yet**. With this group, we started to learn as well about **the "conditionnel"** (just with a few verbs like: je pourrais, je voudrais, je serais etc), so you need to be aware of the tense without mastering it.

We’ll continue working on those tenses and practise speaking more fluently in longer sentences. Expect to still make lots of mistakes (that's totally normal), but also to start enjoying the feeling of really communicating in French. You might be able to say things like:

- “Le week-end dernier, je suis allée au restaurant avec mes amis. J'étais heureux. Et toi, qu'est ce que tu as fait ?”
- “Demain, je vais partir en France et je vais retourner au travail la semaine prochaine. Et toi, qu'est ce que tu vas faire demain ?”

These relaxed **one-off summer workshops** are the perfect opportunity to refresh what you already know in a friendly small group.

Rather than learning new concepts, we'll revisit the French you've already learned through fun speaking activities, games and guided conversations. You'll reactivate useful vocabulary, practise expressing yourself more naturally and rebuild your confidence in a relaxed, supportive atmosphere.

These relaxed **one-off summer classes** are the perfect way to reinforce the foundations you've learnt in a friendly small group while practising French in real-life situations.

Level 0+ - Summer French Starter Workshop (Thursday)

These relaxed **one-off summer classes** are designed to get you speaking. Through engaging activities, discussions and plenty of conversation **in French**, you'll build confidence and refresh vocabulary to be ready for your next trip (or just to have fun).

***Who is this class for?**

This class is designed for Advanced students (B2 and beyond).

In this group, we speak **only in French**, so you'll need to be ready for it!

This is **a conversation-based class** for students who are already very comfortable speaking French and want to take their language to a more natural and nuanced level. At this stage, you’re not afraid to speak, you understand most things a native speaker says (even at near-normal speed), and you're able to express your ideas in depth (even if you still make mistakes).

***What's on the programme?**

Each session will be different. The idea, rather than revising grammar, we'll practise the French you'll actually need when you speak French. Through fun speaking activities and discussion, we'll pick up new vocabulary, discover useful everyday expressions and work on speaking more fluently and confidently. To make sure everyone gets lots of speaking practice, each class is limited to just **6 students.**

***Teacher**

The class will be conducted by Emma, a really experienced native French teacher, from Belgium.

You'll be learning from a native French Speaker, so you’ll experience how French is truly spoken, not from an app or a textbook. A quick heads-up: you won’t be learning the typical phrases like “Parlez-vous français ?” or “Voulez-vous visiter le musée ?” because that’s not how we really talk. But don’t worry, I’ll explain all of that during the course and help you sound like a real French speaker!

- One class either on Monday or Wednesday

***Location**

We'll meet in the famous French cosy café La Barantine in Bruntsfield after it’s closed, which makes it feel more like hanging out than a formal lesson - indeed, don't expect a "rigid" approach such as formal institutions. Students who come are super friendly and motivated, not just to learn French, but to enjoy some time with interesting and nice people. So our classes are all about learning and having a good time together.

***Cancellation Policy**

You can cancel your participation 48 hours before the course starts and get a full refund. After that the course is non-refundable and non-transferable.
