This group is ideal for **advanced beginners**, students who can already manage simple conversations and are starting to feel more comfortable expressing themselves in French, even if it’s slowly. You should already be familiar and be able to speak with the present tense, the past tense (passé composé) and the near future (futur proche) and a bit of conditionnal (je pourrais, je devrais, j’aimerais), even if they’re not perfect yet.

We’ll continue working on those tenses and practise speaking more fluently in longer sentences. Expect to still make lots of mistakes (that's totally normal), but also to start enjoying the feeling of really communicating in French. We are starting to speak only in French (slowly) during the class, so you need to be aware of it! 

You might be able to say things like:

- *“Le week-end dernier, je suis allée au restaurant avec mes amis. J'étais heureux. Et toi, qu'est ce que tu as fait ?”*
- *“Demain, je vais partir en France et je vais retourner au travail la semaine prochaine. Et toi, qu'est ce que tu vas faire demain ?”*

If that sounds like you (even if you still have to think a lot before you speak) this is the right level. Plus, at this level, students should be able to take the **initiative** to learn more words!

This level is for students who have already learnt some basic French before, and they are able to use verbs as (I/you can, I/you want, I/you go, I/you am, I/you have). You can turn the sentences into a negative (je ne peux pas, je ne suis pas…) or turn them into a question (est-ce que je peux… est-ce que tu vas…?). Therefore, you are still really beginners, but still have some basic knowledge of the French language.

🤔***Unsure whether to choose Level 0 or Level 1?*** As a general idea, here’s my advice: if you're deciding between these two levels, keep in mind that for Level 1, you should already feel “comfortable “ forming questions and answers in French. You should know at least a few key verbs, and while you might still make mistakes, especially with small connecting words, you can create sentences like:

- Quand est-ce que je peux aller en France ?
- Je ne vais pas en France parce que je travaille demain.
- Je ne peux pas faire du sport avec mes amis

Therefore, for Level 1, you shouldn’t be completely new to French (learning French in school 30 years ago doesn't really count haha). EDINBURGH - THURSDAY PETIT LEVEL 1 BEGINNER COURSE

📆 Calendar: IN-PERSON: From the 25th of May, you’ll have an hour class **every Monday at 7:15 pm** for 7 weeks until the 6th of July. If you miss a class, you’ll still get the material and some explanations from me so then no excuse to keep practising your French every week!

In this group, **we speak mostly in French** (so you need to be ready for it), but we slow things down when needed and switch to English occasionally to explain trickier concepts. We focus on everyday French: **the way people actually talk**, and we take time to build your vocabulary, fix common mistakes, and work on your listening and speaking confidence.

At this level, students are moving towards **more natural conversations**. You’ve learned most of the core tenses (present, passé composé, imparfait, future, conditionnel) and can use them, even if not always perfectly. **You probably understand a lot more than you can say**, and while you can hold a conversation, you sometimes struggle to find the right word. That’s absolutely fine; this class is here to help with exactly that.

You don’t need to be fluent yet, but you should already feel comfortable listening and speaking French with others.

EDINBURGH - MONDAY INTERMEDIATE FRENCH CLASSES

*Approximate level: A1*

*Note this level is more advanced than a simple level 1.*

📆 Calendar: ONLINE: From the 26th of May, you’ll have an hour class **every Tuesday at 12:30 pm** for 7 weeks until the 7th of July. If you miss a class, don't worry, you'll still get the **replay** of the class and the materials, so no excuse to keep practising your French every week.

At this level, students should have a **solid foundation** in basic French communication. They can comfortably introduce themselves, ask and answer simple questions, and use some simple everyday verbs in the present tense (to go, to do, to like, to want, to come, can). They are also able to navigate common interactions, such as ordering in a restaurant and expressing likes, dislikes, and preferences. At this level, you should be comfortable with your present, future and past tense, as we'll add the conditional to your répertoire!

Students in this group should have already learnt the basics of ***le passé composé,*** which is a past tense in French (j'ai fait, je suis allé, j'ai pris etc). During this term, you'll practise it, and so much more.

At this level, students should have a **solid foundation** in basic French communication. They can comfortably introduce themselves, ask and answer simple questions, and use some simple everyday verbs in the present tense. They are also able to navigate common interactions, such as ordering in a restaurant and expressing likes, dislikes, and preferences. At this level, you should be comfortable with your present and future tense (with *aller*).

Students in this group should be feeling comfortable enough to use ***le passé composé,*** which is a past tense in French (j'ai fait, j'ai pris etc). This group is ideal for **advanced beginners**, students who can already manage simple conversations and are starting to feel more comfortable expressing themselves in French, even if it’s slowly. You should already be familiar and be able to speak in the present tense, the past tense (passé composé) and the near future (futur proche), **even if they’re not perfect yet**. In the previous block, we started covering *“the conditional tense”* with a few verbs ( i.e: je serais, j’aurais, je voudrais, je pourrais, je devrais), so it would be good for you to know them.

We’ll continue working on those tenses and practise speaking more fluently in longer sentences. Expect to still make lots of mistakes (that's totally normal), but also to start enjoying the feeling of really communicating in French. You might be able to say things like:

- “Le week-end dernier, je suis allée au restaurant avec mes amis, nous avons regardé un film au cinéma. On a pris le bus à 19h15. Mes amis m’ont recommandé ce film. Et toi, qu'est ce que tu as fait ?”

In this group, **we are trying to speak mostly in French** (so you need to be ready for it), but we slow things down when needed and switch to English to explain trickier concepts. We focus on everyday French: **the way people actually talk**, and we take time to build your vocabulary, fix common mistakes, and work on your listening and speaking confidence.

At this level, students are moving towards **more natural conversations**. This is **a conversation-based class** for students who are already very comfortable speaking French and want to take their language to a more natural and nuanced level. At this stage, you’re not afraid to speak, you understand most things a native speaker says (even at near-normal speed), and you're able to express your ideas in depth, even if you still make mistakes.

In this class, **we speak French all the time**. We’ll dig into more complex structures, idiomatic expressions, and subtle differences in meaning. You’ll also learn how to sound more French in the way you express yourself—less textbook, more real life. Our discussions go deeper and cover a variety of themes, from culture and society to daily life and personal opinions. It’s a great space to fine-tune your skills, get feedback, and enjoy chatting in French in a small group where everyone is motivated to push themselves. Is this class for you? If you feel it's too much, I would recommend the intermediate one!

🤔 ***Not sure whether to choose the intermediate level or the advanced?*** If you feel confident speaking French, can comfortably engage in conversation without relying on English, and can understand most of what a native speaker says at their near-normal speed, I’d recommend the advanced class.

In this group, **we speak mostly in French** (so you need to be ready for it), but we slow things down when needed and switch to English occasionally to explain trickier concepts. We focus on everyday French: **the way people actually talk**, and we take time to build your vocabulary, fix common mistakes, and work on your listening and speaking confidence.

At this level, students are moving towards **more natural conversations**. You’ve learned most of the core tenses (present, passé composé, imparfait, future, conditionnel) and can use them, even if not always perfectly. **You probably understand a lot more than you can say**, and while you can hold a conversation, you sometimes struggle to find the right word. That’s absolutely fine; this class is here to help with exactly that.

You don’t need to be fluent yet, but you should already feel comfortable listening and speaking French with others.

This group is ideal for **advanced beginners**, students who can already manage simple conversations and are starting to feel more comfortable expressing themselves in French, even if it’s slowly. You should already be familiar and be able to speak in the present tense, the past tense (passé composé) and the near future (futur proche), **even if they’re not perfect yet**. You’ve learnt *“the conditional tense”* with a few verbs ( i.e: je serais, j’aurais, je voudrais, je pourrais, je devrais), even if you don’t master them!

We’ll continue working on those tenses and practise speaking more fluently in longer sentences. Expect to still make lots of mistakes (that's totally normal), but also to start enjoying the feeling of really communicating in French. You might be able to say things like:

- “Le week-end dernier, je suis allée au restaurant avec mes amis, nous avons regardé un film au cinéma. On a pris le bus à 19h15. Mes amis m’ont recommandé ce film. Et toi, qu'est ce que tu as fait ?”

This level is for students who are **no longer scared of speaking**; you're jumping in, even if you’re still searching for the right words and **making regular mistakes**. You’ve already learned the present, past (passé composé), and future tenses, and you've probably seen the imparfait and conditionnel, even if you’re still figuring out how to use them.

In this group, we really start pushing the conversation further: talking about memories, plans, ideas, and preferences with more variety and vocabulary. *The pace is gentle*, and there's plenty of space to ask questions and build confidence, but we’re aiming to move to the next step! **Indeed, the goal is to only speak in French during the class… And we started doing it!**

This group is ideal for **advanced beginners**, students who can already manage simple conversations and are starting to feel more comfortable expressing themselves in French, even if it’s slowly. You should already be familiar and be able to speak in the present tense, the past tense (passé composé) and the near future (futur proche), **even if they’re not perfect yet**. With this group, we started to learn as well about **the "conditionnel"** (just with a few verbs like: je pourrais, je voudrais, je serais etc), so you need to be aware of the tense without mastering it.

Stockbridge - Practise your French with Szymon every Wednesday for 8 weeks at 6:15 pm!

📆 Calendar: IN-PERSON: From the 29th of May, you’ll have an hour class **every Friday at 6:15 pm** for 7 weeks until the 10th of July. If you miss a class, you’ll still get the material and some explanations from me so then no excuse to keep practising your French every week!

This level is for students who have already learnt some basic French before, and they are able to use the main verbs using present tense in French (je peux, je veux, je dois, je fais, je pense etc). You can turn the sentences into a negative (je ne peux pas, je ne suis pas…) or turn them into a question (est-ce que je peux… est-ce que tu vas…?). Therefore, you are beginners, but you still have some basic knowledge of the French language. Students in this group should start feeling comfortable with the future tense using “aller” as well, such as “je vais visiter Paris, nous allons manger des croissants…'“.

In this block, we’ll start slowly learning about the past tense (j’ai fait, je suis allé).

*Hesitating between level 0 and 1?*

Here’s my advice: if you're deciding between these two levels, keep in mind that for Level 1, you should already feel comfortable forming questions and answers in French. You should know at least a few key verbs (perhaps 5–10), and while you might still make mistakes, especially with small connecting words, you can create sentences like:

- Quand est-ce que je peux aller en France ?
- Je ne vais pas en France parce que je travaille demain.
- Pourquoi est-ce que tu dois habiter à Paris ?
- Je ne peux pas faire du sport avec mes amis

Therefore, for Level 1, you shouldn’t be completely new to French; you should already have a bit of confidence speaking and be capable of forming basic sentences. On the other hand, if you’ve learned some French at school or through Duolingo but struggle to ask or answer simple questions correctly, I’d recommend starting with Level 0.

EDINBURGH - FRIDAY LEVEL 1 BEGINNER COURSE

*Please note that this group class is in La Barantine Stockbridge with Szymon.*

📆 Calendar: IN-PERSON: From the 19th of May, you’ll have an hour class **every Tuesday at 7:15 pm** for 8 weeks until the 14th of July (*plus one week off on the 16th of June*). If you miss a class, you’ll still get the material and some explanations from me so then no excuse to keep practising your French every week!

Level 0: Designed for new French learners or those constructing basic sentences, even after using tools like Duolingo for several months and learning French in school.

Over the 8 weeks, you’ll learn to:

- Introduce yourself
- Use essential verbs
- Ask questions
- Express likes and dislikes
- Make well-structured sentences
- Order food and drinks
- Make reservations

Here’s my advice: if you're deciding between these two levels, keep in mind that for Level 1, you should already feel comfortable forming questions and answers in French. You should know at least a few key verbs (perhaps 5–10), and while you might still make mistakes, especially with small connecting words, you can create sentences like:

- Quand est-ce que je peux aller en France ?
- Je ne vais pas en France parce que je travaille demain.
- Pourquoi est-ce que tu dois habiter à Paris ?
- Je ne peux pas faire du sport avec mes amis

Therefore, for Level 1, you shouldn’t be completely new to French; you should already have a bit of confidence speaking and be capable of forming basic sentences. On the other hand, if you’ve learned some French at school or through Duolingo but struggle to ask or answer simple questions correctly, I’d recommend starting with Level 0.

📚 That's the overall idea, but as you know, **language learning is fluid** and can vary from one student to another. That’s why we keep our classes small, with a maximum of 6 students, to ensure we can adjust to each student’s level and make sure everyone gets plenty of speaking time. The key to learning a language is by speaking it, so our main focus is simple: speak, speak, and speak.

🧑‍🏫 The class will be conducted by Szymon, from Nantes in France, a really experienced native French teacher.

🗣You'll be learning from a **native French Speaker**, so you’ll experience how French is truly spoken—not from an app or a textbook. A quick heads-up: you won’t be learning the typical phrases like “Parlez-vous français ?” or “Voulez-vous visiter le musée ?” because that’s not how we really talk. But don’t worry, I’ll explain all of that during the course and help you sound like a real French speaker!

The class is open for only **6 students** to keep the class small and cosy, but mostly unsure everyone can practice and ask questions.

☕We'll meet in the famous French cosy café **La Barantine in Stockbridge** after it’s closed, which makes it feel more like hanging out than a formal lesson - indeed don't expect a "rigid" approach such as formal institutions. Students who come are super friendly and motivated—not just to learn French, but to enjoy some time with interesting and nice people. So my classes are all about **learning and having a good time together**.

Every class includes homework and different types of exercises to help you keep a good routine outside of the class. You'll get all the materials on a printed and online version, before/after each class, meaning you don't need to buy a book.
